Royer Kyle

04 February 2014 Author :

In 2011 when he was just 20 years old, Kyle Royer became a Mastersmith through the American Bladesmith Society.

Initially self-taught, the young Kyle decided in 2007 to enroll at the W.F. Moran School of Bladesmithing in Old Washington, Arkansas, where he learnt the bladesmithing arts supported by Mastersmiths Bert Gaston, Greg Neely Jim Walker and Ron Newton.
His diligence, enthusiasm and passion for the blades resulted in Kyle becoming a full-time knifemaker, a luxury that few craftsmen can afford.
He specializes in forged fixed blade knives but also produces many other types of knives such as automatic folders, slip-joint folders and liner lock folders. He's beginning to learn the art of engraving, to inlay gold and/or silver in his knives.
The materials for handles preferred by the knife maker are Desert Ironwood, Mammoth Ivory, Sambar Stag and African Blackwood. Regarding steels, Kyle generally uses the 1084 and 15N20 to realize his Damascus with a forge and a forty ton hydraulic press, and for his plain carbon blades he uses 5160 and W2 steels.

It is said that “genius consists of an unlimited ability to take care of the details” (Conan Doyle), and it is for this reason that Kyle's talent is on the border of genius.
Kyle has written to us stating "God has given me all the opportunities and teachers that I’ve had and I thank Him for giving me the ability to do something I love", but we like to believe, to quote a Latin phrase, "Faber est suae quisque fortunae", that is "everyone is the architect of his own fortune".
