Benchmade Proper

When simplicity conquers! This is the case of the Benchmade Proper, an ultra-classic slipjoint knife, characterized by a blade made in premium steel and a variety of handle colors and materials.

The American Benchmade Co. boasts a rich and varied range of products, divided into different classes according to their intended use. The knives for daily use belong to the Blue Class and in this category we find the Proper.
This slipjoint knife could be found with two different blade profiles: sheepsfoot (model 319) or clip-point (model 318); both blades are characterized by a length of 73 mm, a thickness of 2.3 mm and a satin finish; the steel used is the CPM-S30V hardened at 58 / 60HRC, which offers an high cutting edge retention.

While the clip-point profile has a flat blade spine, the sheepsfoot one features a swedge that extends for ¾ of the blade, lightening it also aesthetically. There is a fine jimping near the thumb rest.

The blade opening occurs through the nail mark on its left side; the spring offers good resistance both when opening and when releasing the blade.

The Proper handle consists of two brown Micarta scales, fixed by torx screws to the steel folders. The overall dimensions allow a comfortable grip and although there are no particular texture, the grip is very good. At the end of the handle there is the lanyard hole. The Proper doesn't feature the pocket clip, and in my opinion it's a justified choice given the type of knife.

As an alternative to Micarta, the Proper can be chosen with the red G10 or carbon fiber scales. There is also a Limited Edition with blue G10 scales and DLC blade.
The retail price in Europe of the two models with micarta handle, is of €135 and $150 in the USA.

We have qualitatively tested the cutting performances of the two models available, detecting an excellent factory sharpening. The handle is comfortable and, compared to the G10, the micarta offers a slightly firmer grip on the instrument.

The small knife disappears in the pocket and thanks to its weight of 66 g you will forget its presence. In my opinion, as already mentioned for other gentlemen's knife examined, I would have appreciated a small leather sheath supplied with this knife.

The Proper is a good friend for daily activities; the materials used ensure it a rather long life and in terms of size and design, as mentioned at the beginning, is a classic that never go out of style.
